Mask research
For this section I had to do all the research for my mask. I used places like Wikipedia and various other websites to gather important information about all different types of masks and about masks in general. The first thing I did was find out ‘what a mask was’ and I found out about what masks were used for, where they originate form what they are made from... ECT. I also found out the definition for “masks”.
I chose 4 of my favorite masks that I had researched about (theatre, Chinese, Latin American and African masks) and then more thoroughly researched these I broke the research down into 6 sections; what the mask is made from, the following factors have an impact on materials and processes used and the way the way the artifact looks and operates, the impact on developing technologies was, the process used would have been something like, the propose was, and then I did some general information. I think that the mask I used were the best idea because I was genuinely interested in finding out about them.
I also did some 3D material experiments using mod-roc, clay, soap and plasticine. I took a part of each mask and made it out of one of these materials. For my 2D material experiment I did the same thing but instead I used pencil, pen and oil pastels this time I uses the same mask for all three but I chose to do different parts of it like mouth, eyes and forehead.
Ive also done the health and safety rules but I decided to stick that at the end with the other health and safety page I did this because I thought that it would be easier to just see all the rules in one place. But over all ive written out all the hazards and how to avoid them and the precautions you need to take while using paint ect.
I think that my strengths during this section were the actual researching part. I really liked going through all the different websites to find out about the masks and all about there heritage. I think that another one of my strengths was doing the secondary mask drawings I really liked how they come out and I think that they look quite similar to the mask that I drew.
I think that one of my weaknesses was actually putting the research into my book but in the end I got there even if it was slightly after everyone else. I think that another of my weaknesses are that I didn’t get the health and safety done by accident and then went on to the next section with out doing it so I had to put it in with one of the other sections.
Solutions to these would be to get less distracted from what im not so interested in and just get on with the work as much as possible. Also to have looked through my check list more thoroughly, this would have prevented me from forgetting to do my piece on health and safety.
I think that I am achieving what I set out to achieve, but I think that I haven’t over don’t my book on the creative side and that my book is very simple and easy to read and is set out well so that I can see every thing clearly. I think I could have improved by writing more, because I feel there isn’t enough information but ive done everything that I needed to but think that I realized this towards the end so I tried to add in as much information as possible with out overloading it.
Throughout the ‘artifact’ section of my diploma I have learnt some really good points for health and safety, here is what I have learnt: if I use any paint, mod-roc, clay, PVA ect. I need to have the windows open, an apron on, news paper down and it would be helpful if you have your hair out of the way. You also need to make sure that you try not to get any of these on your clothes either as they may not come out in the wash, if there is any contact with eyes they must be washed immediately and its not for internal use. I also now know the basics like don’t run with scissors and the hazards of common rescores like pens pencils,
Time & Tide visit
for this section the first thing we did was go to the Time & Tide Museum
I think that my strengths were trying to draw some of the masks that we saw at the museum, I really liked this part and found it really great to do because the masks were really old and funny shaped. I think that another thing that I did well was the photos, I think that I choose the best ones and set them out really well in my book I really liked his page.
I think that my weakness was drawing the features, when I go home and looked at them before I stuck them into my book I found it really hard to even see what they were but I think this is more due to time issues and that I rushed them a little. I also think that my evaluation of the trip lacked a little bit I really found it hard about what to write because I felt like I was just re-writing the diary entry fro that week so I didn’t write much for that.
My solution to this is to try and just take more time over doing things. Im really not sure how I can improve on the evaluation issue, I think that maybe I could have asked the teacher for some more help but I didn’t I just tried to do it my self.
I think that I have achieved some of what I wanted to on this section but I think that some of it lacked creativity, im not sure why this happened but I just couldn’t seem to think of anything to put into it. Although I do really like the drawings that ive done so I am quite happy. I will try and improve this though. I think that I could of improved all of this section and I don’t think that I put all my effort into to although I still did work really hard, just this was the last section I did in my book and id lost my concentration. I am going to try and ad a little more to this part before my book gets marked though.
I made sure while I was on the trip that I was carful with all the stuff in there and that when I was using the pencil I didn’t harm myself with it, but this section didn’t really have that many safety hazards though.
Theme
First I made a mid map of all different themes that I could and stuck them all im my book, them I chose my theme (Americana) and then made another mind map with my theme Americana in the middle and thought of all thing that I associated with Americana (things like the American flag, burgers, fashion shows ect..) and wrote out why I chose this theme and stuck them all in. I really like this way of laying things out because its really easy to see what’s on the page. I also drew some drawings to go with my theme and annotated everything.
I think that my strength was that I picked out a good theme and that I made it all clear what was going on in this section also really like the pictures that I drew in my artist pictures I think that they are quite a lot like Hundertwassers because they are colourful and bright.
but then I think that my weakness was that I didn’t write much and I think that I could get marked down for this so I am a bit worried about this.
Solutions for this I think are that I have achieved all that I wanted to in this section, the only thing is what ive already said and that’s to write a bit more.
While doing this I used scissors quite a lot to cut all my different parts out but I made sure I was safe with them, I also used paint but I made sure that I proceeded with all the safety measures. (open windows, news paper down, aprons, didn’t inhale the fumes to much ect..)
Artist
First I made a mind map of all different artists that I could se for my mask I put down all different ones like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Hundertwasser. Then I chose my artist (Hundertwasser) and wrote a paragraph on why I chose him and did another mind map of his panting and why I liked them. I did some artist drawings with two of his paintings I wrote underneath why I liked these. Think that this is one of my best bits and I really like it because this is the point that u realized that I needed to write a bit more so there is two big paragraphs of information.
I think hat my strength with this part was the fact that I had a lot of knowledge of famous artists and Hundertwasser has always been one of my favorites I lve his bright pallet that’s usually only the prime colours and them like a bit of orange, green ect.. but then I think that my weakness was probably the fact that my writing isn’t very neat but this is more on an ongoing problem my solution to this is going to be to type everything next time. Ive also written all about Hundertwassers like and put in some pictures of him and done a page on his art style.
Yes I think that I am achieving what I set out it in this section I thing that this is one of my strong parts because I am really interested in Hundertwasser but again I think that I just need to improve on my hand writing.
Im this section I used sequins you need to be careful that you don’t choke on these.
Designs 2D/3D
first I did my 6 rough designs for my mask I really like them all because they are all individual I got inspiration from pictures that I had found on the internet and added all my own elements into them, I then annotated them. I chose my 3 best and redrew them bigger and then stuck them in my book and annotated them and wrote what I liked about them I really liked this part because I think that the burger idea that I used is really good and like colorful. I also did 2D and 3D material experiment to help me chose what I wanted to use for my actual mask and I chose clay because I really liked the texture and I just thought it would go best with my design. And then I wrote out all the health and safety rules out while doing this. I also did my computer manipulation, I liked this.
My strength I think was doing my final designs I really liked doing this because I found it really creative and that I could just let my mind run wild I also liked testing the materials too. I think that my weakness probably was the computer manipulation I thought it was really hard but after it was explained to me a few times I found it much, much easer than at the start, I think the solution to this would just be to ask for help sooner rather than waiting.
I know that I defiantly achieved what I wanted to in this section and im quite confident about it I really liked the whole thing to be honest I don’t thing that I would change anything I really enjoyed this section. I might be able to improve it better though if I had done this section a little faster and not done everything so slowly but I thought I did okay catching up. I had to use my safety rules for when I used things like clays and mod-rock and things like that.
Final 3D mask
I fist made my mask from clay I rolled it out and then made a support from newspaper them smoothed it into the shape that I wanted and added the other parts that I needed for it and then it went into the kiln I then painted it and added the extra tissue paper and mod-roc and then painted on the artist design. Ive also stuck in all my diary entries and I put all the pictures of the different stages on my mask into my book. I put a picture of my finished mask into my book and then labeled it and said why I did all the things I did.
My strength was actually making the mask I really liked this it was really fun I think that my weakness was only that I was a little bit behind but im fine now my solution to this is just to do more work at home. I do think that I have achieved this section to the standard that I hope for and I think that its come out just as I imagined maybe even better and I love my final piece, im also proud of all the book work that I have done to go along with it.
I would like to improve the amount of book work that ive done during this section but I don’t really know where I could improve that because I have been asked to do. During the time in which I made my mask I made sure I wore aprons, opened windows, put down news paper and took into consideration all the other rules too.
